Scale Beyond Comparison -
When it comes to lettering there are a few artists that I admire, but at the top of the list is Retna. The scale of buildings is barely enough to to hold his bold work. When I think of Retna, I think of oversized brush strokes with raw intensity. A explosion of energy while the brush hits the wall that can only contained by years of perfecting his style. It is this, I have grown to crave in his works.
RETNA (aka Marquis Lewis) first picked up a spray paint canister at the age of 9, after being fascinated by the gang tags and graffiti around him. That interest blended with his attraction to illuminated manuscripts, Basquiat, Degas, and Klimt, resulting in his personal fusion of modern and classic artistic styles.
His distinctive script is an amalgam of blackletter, Egyptian hieroglyphics, Arabic, and Hebrew calligraphy, as well as traditional forms of graffiti.
“I want my text to feel universal. I want people from different cultures to all find some similarity in it – whether they can read it or not.”

Every piece, whether canvas, mural, or scarf, is comprised of urban poetics written in his own personal alphabet. The innovation has made him one of the most praised calligraphers and wealthiest street artists of our time.
While parts of his story are typical of street artists, like choosing a pseudonym from Wu Tang Clan lyrics "Heaterz”’ Kinetic globes light will then shine, burns your retina’).
RETNA’s influences go far beyond his contemporaries and surroundings, stretching to etymological and historical roots,
“I had a fascination for cultures that had passed, that had informed the future and for who we are as people. I was always intrigued by that kind of work.”.

His cultural presence also goes beyond even the most successful street artist collaborations. In recent years he has worked with the artistic director at San Francisco Opera and was even put forward as part of the LA pitch to host the Olympic Games in 2024. The language of fictional country, Wakanda, was even inspired by RETNA’s script. His ever-growing list of collaborations includes Louis Vuitton, Nike, and Chanel, as his work is increasingly sought-after on both sides of the Atlantic.

"Retna has inspired me in scale. He does not let the size or scope of a project intimidate him. He takes a deep breath and keeps moving forward turning the unknown into the known".
